M9 Preston - North Essendon Water Main Upgrade
What does the project involve?
Melbourne Water (as part of the Water Resources Alliance) is installing a new 10.5km water main linking the Preston Reservoir to supply tanks located beside Essendon Airport. Works to install the new water main will take place in Coburg, Pascoe Vale and Strathmore over a two year period. Construction started in December 2008 and is expected to be complete by early 2011.
Why are we replacing the water main?
The M9 water main is more than 100 years old and is at the end of its service life. Upgrading this main is an essential part of Melbourne Water's program; to secure supply to homes and businesses in the northern and western suburbs and to help conserve our precious water resources.
Staggered works
To minimise construction impacts on the community and assure the safety of all, works have been staggered. Working this way also allows the Alliance to deliver the project in the most efficient manner.
The project is made up of eight stages. Stages one, two, three, five, six, have been completed. The Alliance is continuing to work through stages four, and the railway crossings on stages seven and eight with completion expected in early 2011.
