STORAGES UP BY 0.45%

Welcome rain has helped Melbourne’s storages increase to 30.3% full (537,825 million litres), rising by 0.45% or almost 8 billion litres during the week.

Despite the increase, storages remain 4.7% (or 83 billion litres) below where they were this time last year (35%).

Average rainfall across the four major catchments since last Thursday was 35mm. Runoff into most reservoirs remained below average, however, due to prolonged dry conditions.

Melbourne posted its third lowest week of water use for 2008 so far, with wintry conditions and ongoing savings bringing consumption down to 942 million litres per day. This compares with the winter average of 1,108 litres per day during the 1990s.

Stage 3a restrictions are in place until at least 30 November 2008. Further details on water restrictions are available by visiting the Our Water Our Future website or by contacting the government water retailers.
