Am I eligible for a half share fence with Melbourne Water?
You are eligible for half share fencing with us if:
- Your property borders our property or
- The abutting land is maintained by us.
How do I apply for half share fencing?
A fencing application form is available online.
A fencing application form (PDF, 34kb) can be posted, faxed or registered online.
Two written quotes in Jpeg or Adobe Acrobat (PDF) form are required if applying online.

How many quotes do I need?
We require two written quotes to accompany your fencing application form.
How do I know if what is quoted is a reasonable price?
$45-$65 per metre is considered an appropriate cost for a standard paling fence up to 1.9m height. Applications with quotes exceeding this price may result in a request for additional quotes.
Note: The cost per metre is inclusive of removal and disposal of the old fence.
What types of fencing will we pay half for?
We will pay for the following types of fence:
- Standard paling fences up to 1.9m height
- Farm fencing in rural areas
- Chain mesh fence where appropriate.
What types of fences are not eligible?
- Colour bond
- Gates
How do I know if my application has been approved?
We will respond to your fencing application via written correspondence.
Please do not proceed with fencing works until a confirmation letter has been received from us.
Please allow at least two weeks from the date your application was sent.
How do I know which quote has been approved?
The letter from us will specify which quote and contractor has been approved.
How is payment received?
There are two ways you can process a payment:
- The contractor can send an invoice for half the cost to us
- The resident can pay for all the works and send a copy of the invoice to us and we will pay half of the total cost.
Please allow at least 28 days from the date the invoice was sent to receive payment.
