Build a raingarden

Help clean up stormwater before it reaches your local waterway and make a difference to the health of your local river or creek by building a raingarden. Raingardens can be adapted to suit most areas, and they look great too!

Learn more about raingardens and find out how to create your own with a step-by-step guide.

Find a green gardener

Green Gardeners offer professional advice and information about the impact of garden chemicals and practices on the health of local waterways.

Developed by Sustainable Gardening Australia and Melbourne Water, the Green Gardeners program offers TAFE-accredited training to gardeners to enable them to give advice about sustainable plants, products and practices for your garden.

You can locate a Green Gardener through the search facility on the Green Gardeners website.

Building and renovating

If you are building or renovating your home, you should consider how you can minimise the impact your project may have on local waterways.

Find a green builder

GreenLiving Builders have been trained in practical solutions to reduce stormwater pollution from building sites. We are working with the building industry to provide practical solutions and training to minimise the impact of building and renovation activities on the health of rivers and creeks.

Find a GreenLiving Builder on the Master Builders Association website.

Melbourne Water works in partnership with the Master Builders Association of Victoria and the Housing Industry Association.

Paint and chemical disposal

Stormwater drains lead to waterways. They should never be used to dispose of chemicals such as paint.

The safe paint disposal page describes how to dispose of paint safely.

Sustainability Victoria’s Paintback and Detox your home schemes also have lots of useful advice on how to dispose of chemicals safely.
