New Waterways Boundary Area

Why has the boundary extended?

The State Government extended the waterways and drainage boundary as part of the Our Water Our Future action plan. This change aimed to address inconsistencies where there was no one authority managing waterways in these parts of the Port Phillip and Westernport region.

For the first time, a single authority has responsibility for regional drainage, flood plain and waterways services across the whole region. That means we can take an integrated approach to managing waterways and drainage, and give the health of our rivers a better chance in the long term.

Where is the new boundary?

The region now extends from high up in the Yarra Ranges across to Ballan in the west, right across to Tarago in the east and encapsulates Phillip Island and the Mornington Peninsula in the south. The below map clearly shows the old and new boundary areas.

What do these changes mean?

We have provided services in our old area for many years. Now that the boundary has been extended, we provide these services to our new areas as well.

We are now providing services for the first time to:

  • Moorabool Shire
  • Macedon Ranges Shire
  • Mitchell Shire
  • City of Greater Geelong.

We have also extended our services in:

  • Melton Shire
  • Bass Coast Shire
  • South Gippsland Shire
  • Mornington Peninsula Shire
  • City of Wyndham
  • City of Hume.

To fund waterway, floodplain and regional drainage management activities in these areas, we have introduced a waterways charge. This charge is similar to the charge already in place in other areas of the Port Phillip and Westernport region. You can find out more about the charge in the Waterways charge page.

Who have we worked with on these changes?

Over the past two years we have worked closely with local communities and stakeholders to gain local information, discuss expectations and establish service levels. Our services have been gradually introduced, extensive planning for future works completed and priority works have begun.
